Techniques that individuals use to improve their emotional state into a more relaxing level that suits them so that they can be able to achieve their set goals is what is referred to as emotional self –regulation. Whenever the emotional levels of a kid are high normally it hinders them from making a decision. When the child is very young it is hard for them to employ strategies to handle their emotional levels and therefore the parents are needed so much in this stage to help the child in employing these strategies.
A typical 3-year old would find it hard to control their emotional impulses but as their language develops they are able to talk about their feelings more thus they can be able to control their feelings. Now as they grow they can be able to block away thoughts and feelings that don’t please them or even set new goals that are less vulnerable to feelings. Whenever adults control their emotional impulses so does the kids learn new ways to help them control their emotions. They are various ways that can help you promote emotional self-regulation of the kidat this stage.
Converse – a conversation between an adult and a kid is very important in helping the children know how to cope with difficulties that they may face in future. We equip them with the mechanism to help them cope with emotional impulses whenever we talk to them in a calm and open way.
Role model- children at any given time look up to the adults, therefore, the actions and behavior of the adults give them some experience as to how they should behave in the near future. Children know how to better control their emotions whenever parents portray composure and self- regulating behaviors in front of them.
The structure- the environment in which the child grows in is affected so much by the structure as it prepares the kid as to what to expect and anticipate events. The structure helps them be prepared mentally and be better controllers of emotions when they move out of the home structure into a new different one.
A Parent can make a believe play- making a believe play with their children helps to create an imagination of the actual experience in actual life and how the kid should behave when they encounter the problem. The experience of parents gives the kid a perspective to handle emotions more maturely.
To help a child who is struggling with self- regulation the following behavioral strategies prove to work best:
Have consistency in promoting self-regulation- parents may employ strategies to help their kids but they may prove ineffective if the child is struggling with self-regulation. Exacting more control in the situation and providing, even more, support can help deal with these difficult emotional impulses. In school, the teachers can provide more support and attention to the kids suffering from self-regulation by structuring the classroom in a simpler way that favors them.
Teaching the kid how to deal with self-regulation- acting as a role model can help the kid struggling with self-regulation as to how they should control their emotional impulses. Reminding the kids in a gentle voice to help the child understand what is expected of him. A teacher may suggest that when they are doing a task that the kid maintains eye contact throughout the task but on the realization that the kid is bored in his task they should a soft voice on the kid rather than condone them.
Both the adults and children do have experiences in which the emotions affect how they behave but because the adults have developed more mechanisms to handle these emotional impulses they are able to cope better. When we teach the kids how to self-regulate we are teaching them to make their own interpretation of situations. Patience, consistency and being calm when teaching children on how to self-regulate is very important because different children respond differently.
